More Information About Boiler Repair Services
Common Boiler Problems We Fix Every Day
Most boiler faults fall into a handful of common categories. Here’s what we see regularly across Brighton homes — and what it usually means.
No Heating or Hot Water
The most common call we get. This can be caused by a range of issues — a failed diverter valve, a faulty motorised valve, low system pressure, a broken thermostat, or a pump failure. In many cases it’s a straightforward fix once we’ve diagnosed the root cause. We’ll check your system methodically rather than guessing, so you’re not paying for parts you don’t need.
Boiler Losing Pressure
If you’re constantly topping up the pressure via the filling loop, there’s likely a leak somewhere in the system — a leaking pressure relief valve, a failing expansion vessel, or a small pipe leak that isn’t immediately visible. We use pressure testing to trace the source and carry out the repair properly rather than just topping it up and leaving.
Boiler Leaking Water
A boiler leaking from the bottom or from pipe connections is never something to ignore. Depending on where the leak is coming from, the cause might be a corroded heat exchanger, a failed pump seal, or loose connections. We’ll assess whether the component can be repaired or needs replacing and give you an honest recommendation.
Strange Noises — Banging, Whistling, or Gurgling
Banging or “kettling” noises usually point to limescale build-up on the heat exchanger, particularly common in hard-water areas of Sussex. Gurgling can indicate air trapped in the system or a failing pump. Whistling often means restricted water flow. We’ll identify which it is and fix it — in many cases a power flush can resolve persistent noise issues.
Boiler Keeps Locking Out or Showing Error Codes
Modern boilers lock out as a safety precaution when they detect a fault. If yours keeps displaying an error code and won’t fire up, it’s telling you something specific is wrong — it could be a flame sensor issue, an ignition fault, a flue blockage, or a PCB problem. Our engineers are familiar with error codes across all major brands and can diagnose the issue quickly without trial-and-error part swapping.
Radiators Not Heating Up Properly
Cold spots at the top of radiators usually mean trapped air — a simple bleed will fix it. But if radiators are cold at the bottom or some radiators don’t heat at all, the problem is more likely sludge build-up in the system, a faulty zone valve, or a pump that’s struggling. We can assess whether individual radiator work, a zone valve replacement, or a full system power flush is the right solution.
Pilot Light Keeps Going Out
On older boilers with a standing pilot light, repeated failure to stay lit can indicate a faulty thermocouple, a draught issue, or a gas supply problem. On newer models with electronic ignition, intermittent ignition failure may point to electrode wear, a wiring fault, or a PCB issue. Either way, this needs a Gas Safe registered engineer — never attempt to fix gas-related faults yourself.
Frozen Condensate Pipe
Particularly common in Brighton during cold snaps. Modern condensing boilers have an external condensate pipe that can freeze in winter, causing the boiler to shut down. While you can sometimes thaw it yourself with warm (not boiling) water, if it keeps happening you may need the pipe rerouted or insulated. We can fix the immediate problem and prevent it recurring.
Boiler Brands We Repair
Our engineers are trained and experienced across all major boiler manufacturers. We regularly carry out repairs on Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal (we are Ideal advanced installers), Glow-worm, Potterton, Main, Ferroli, Alpha, and Viessmann.
If your boiler brand isn’t listed here, call us anyway — chances are we’ve worked on it before. We also carry a range of common parts on our vans for the most popular models, meaning most repairs are completed on the first visit.
