Why Homeowners in Brighton Are Fitting Air Conditioning
Heating and cooling on demand
One system, both jobs. Cooling through the summer, efficient heating through the winter, controlled room by room rather than heating the whole house.
Fresh, circulated air
Directional louvres move air evenly around the room instead of leaving hot and cold pockets — far more effective than an open window on a still summer night.
Cleaner air indoors
Built-in filtration captures dust, pollen and smoke particles as air passes through the unit. Manufacturers quote filtration performance of up to 95% on domestic units — a real benefit if anyone in the house suffers from hay fever.
Controlled humidity
Air conditioning removes moisture as it cools. In a coastal city like Brighton that means less of the sticky, close feeling on humid days, and a drier home overall.

The Systems We Install
We specify equipment to suit the room and the budget rather than pushing one brand, and we’ll talk the options through with you at survey stage.
- Wall-mounted split systems — the most common choice for a bedroom, living room or home office. One indoor unit, one outdoor condenser.
- Multi-split systems — several indoor units running from a single outdoor condenser, ideal when you want to cover two or three rooms without cluttering the exterior wall.
- Ceiling cassettes and ducted systems — for commercial spaces, or homes where a wall-mounted unit isn’t practical.
Whichever route you take, modern units offer Wi-Fi and app control, a quiet overnight mode, an eco setting to reduce running costs, and heating as well as cooling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we’re asked most often about air conditioning — or get in touch and we’ll talk it through.
Who actually carries out the installation?
Bishops Plumbers manages the job as main contractor — survey, design, electrical supply, condensate drainage, builders work and aftercare. The refrigeration side of the installation is carried out by our REFCOM-registered installation partner, whose engineers hold current F-Gas certification.
UK law requires that anyone working on refrigerant circuits holds this certification, and we’re straightforward about how the work is split. You have one contract, one quote and one number to call.
What is F-Gas certification, and why does it matter?
Air conditioning systems contain fluorinated refrigerant gases. These are potent greenhouse gases, so UK law restricts who may install, service or decommission the equipment that contains them. Companies must hold certification from a body such as REFCOM, and individual engineers must hold Category I–IV certificates.
If you’re getting quotes from more than one company, ask each of them for their company certification number and confirmation that the engineers attending hold current personal certificates. Anyone doing this properly will give you both without hesitation.
Are air conditioning units expensive to run?
Modern inverter-driven units are far more efficient than older fixed-speed systems — they ramp up to reach the target temperature, then throttle back to maintain it rather than cycling on and off. Running cost depends on the size of the room, how well insulated it is, the efficiency rating of the unit and how long you run it for.
In heating mode, an air conditioning system moves heat rather than generating it, which is why it can work out cheaper to run than an electric heater for the same room. We’ll give you realistic figures for your specific setup at survey stage.
Please note that air conditioning is not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme or other government heat pump grants — those apply to full air source and ground source heat pump systems installed by MCS-certified installers.
How much maintenance does a home air conditioning system need?
Indoor units on modern systems are quiet enough for bedrooms and living rooms, and most have a silent or night mode that runs the fan at its lowest speed. The outdoor condenser makes more noise, so siting matters — we’ll look at where it can go with the least impact on you and on neighbouring properties, including anti-vibration mounts where appropriate.
Do I need planning permission for the outdoor unit?
It depends on the property and where the unit goes. Restrictions are tighter on flats, listed buildings and properties in conservation areas — and Brighton & Hove has a large number of conservation areas, so it’s a genuine consideration here rather than a formality.
We’ll flag anything likely to need consent at survey stage, and we’d always recommend confirming with Brighton & Hove City Council’s planning department before work is booked in.
Can air conditioning heat my home as well as cool it?
Yes. Almost all the systems we install are reversible, meaning the same unit provides heating in winter and cooling in summer. It won’t replace a whole-house central heating system, but for a specific room — a converted loft, a home office, an extension, a conservatory — it’s often a more practical and more efficient answer than extending the heating system.
How long does an installation take?
A single wall-mounted system in a straightforward location is usually a one-day job. Multi-split systems, longer pipe runs, or installations needing scaffolding or core drilling through difficult walls will take longer. We’ll confirm the timescale in writing when we quote, so there are no surprises.
How much maintenance does an air conditioning system need?
Filters should be cleaned or replaced every few months — a simple job you can do yourself, and we’ll show you how at handover. Beyond that, an annual service is recommended to check refrigerant levels, clean the coils and inspect the electrical components. The refrigerant checks must be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer, which we arrange through our installation partner.
If your system contains 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent of refrigerant or more, you have a legal duty as the operator to have it leak-checked at set intervals and to keep records. This mainly affects commercial systems — we’ll tell you clearly if it applies to you.
How long do air conditioning units last?
With regular servicing, 10 to 15 years is a realistic expectation, and often longer. Neglected systems fail earlier — a blocked filter or a dirty coil forces the unit to work harder, drives up running costs and shortens its life.
Do you handle the electrical work?
Yes. The dedicated supply, isolator and containment for your air conditioning system are handled as part of the installation, so you don’t need to arrange a separate electrician. All electrical work is completed to current wiring regulations and certified on completion.
